Reviews
Liz Mullinar, Founder, Advocates for Survivors of Child Abuse
I am not a music critic but I am a survivor of abuse who enjoys good music. Music connects on a deep level, it soothes and restores when it is good. This is exactly what Monique Lisbon's collection The Lies Of Love does. It comments on, reflects on, the feelings of those who have been abused. It does not upset or distress, it raises the spirits, it gives a sense of depth and purpose and above all the music makes the listener aware that the writer and indeed the musicians, care and understand the pain of child abuse.
The music gently caresses the listener with love.
The music is not simplistic, it has many levels, it is complex and covers a variety of moods, there is something for everybody on this album.
Those who have survived abuse have a sense in the music of a higher authority, of there being something above and beyond oneself—a greater authority who does care. There is a deep sense of faith in this music, of connecting with the listener's own spirituality.
It allows the inner spirit to soar. This is an album for those who have been abused, for those who care about abuse and most importantly—for those who just like to listen to really good music!
Melanie Pitcher, Alive Magazine
From the picture on the cover of this CD, it's immediately obvious that The Lies of Love is not a pop album. Rather, it is a remarkably brave offering of songs drawn from Monique Lisbon's experiences as a survivor of child abuse.
Themes of betrayal, confusion, loss, anger, comfort and forgiveness are present on this meditative collection of work. The Lies of Love gives the listeners an honest look at the emotions which often whirl around in a mind disturbed by a sense of powerlessness and lost innocence.
Musically, The Lies of Love sounds fairly simple—the sounds do not overwhelm the sentiment of the songs. This is surprising given that the instrumentation ranges from piano, guitar, drums and saxophone to Chinese mouth organ, Japanese zither and Vietnamese oboe.
Despite its heavy subject matter, The Lies of Love is overall a hopeful collection of work. Dedicated to 'All those carrying the legacy of abuse—for inspiring me with your survival... The Wounded Healer—for leading me onwards', Lisbon has finally completed a work that was a long time coming. It will surely be of benefit to those who know the pain of abuse.
